Shep met and married his wife of 65 years, Rowena Shepherd, while on leave; and the two of them had 5 boys, Jim, John, Jeff, Jerome, and Jerald Shepherd. After retiring from the Airforce in 1968 he joined the Solano County Sheriff's Department as a Correctional Officer from 1969-1978. In 1978 they moved to Coeur d'Alene Idaho, where he joined the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department from 1978-1987. He then retired and focused on his favorite hobby of woodworking in his shop.
